Get your bookmarks out and mark your
calendars because the Daviess County Public Library is offering plenty of
inspiration to keep reading happening at your house all summer.
Summer reading activities, special guest performances and crafts will fill
young minds with mysterious merriment.
"Get a Clue" activities are free for ages 12 and under. This series kicks
off on Wednesday with "Can You Keep a Secret." Come to the Youth Services
Department from 2 to 4 p.m. to make some nifty gadgets to help you keep your
spy secrets. Also, make a Morse code necklace and learn how to make
invisible ink and a secret code wheel.
It's no secret this series should be fun, so also mark these dates:
"Fingerprint Fun" turns fingerprints into art from 2 to 4 p.m. June 13.
"The Penguin Party" takes place from 2 to 3 p.m. June 14 and again from 6 to
7 p.m. The Heiken Puppet Company will bring to life leopards, wolves, polar
bears and penguins during this exciting puppet show.
On June 20, the Youth Services Department is hosting a Bingo Bash from 2 to
4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for those clever gamers in the family. Or Dig
for Dinos from 2 to 4 p.m. June 27.
And to assure your family gets the clue that reading is fun, don't miss the
library's annual Summer Reading Party from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. June 9. Hot
dogs are cooking on the grill while craft stations and obstacle courses lure
children to the front lawn of the library for true summertime fun. Hear
stories under a shade tree and register for very cool door prizes.
The entire family will also enjoy "A Patriotic Salute" from 6:30 to 7:30
p.m. June 26. Join the Youth Services Department's celebration of America.
Representatives from different branches of the military will be on hand.
You'll also have the opportunity to write a letter to a soldier and/or make
a donation for phone cards to be mailed to our troops.
"Stars and Stripes for Fun" is being offered from 9 a.m. to noon on June
28-29 and again from 5 to 9 p.m. The Youth Services Department invites
children 12 and under and their families to make a patriotic baton to
celebrate Independence Day.
Not to overlook the tried and true -- story time at 9:30 a.m. every Monday,
Tuesday and Thursday. Two groups break off for Read-to-Me activities. Ages 4
and 5 take off to Story Time Corner for a fun-filled hour of stories,
rhymes, songs, games and a "make-it and take-it" craft.
Meanwhile ages 3 and under and their parents or caregivers will enjoy
interactive stories, finger plays and songs in a group setting.
For more information on these and other fun activities, call Jane R. Fink at

Also, if you haven't seen Merely Players yet, be sure to mark June 28 for
their performance of "Dr. Seuss Deux" from 4 to 5 p.m. and again at 6
p.m. Be sure to get to the auditorium early to assure a spot to hop, flop or
pop to the magical words of Dr. Seuss.
