English 'Rattlesnakes' coming to local coffee house 5/4/07 A documentary film about an Australian male prostitute inspired "Rattlesnakes," the dramatic intrigue playing two weeks in Owensboro, Ky., with a one-night reading in Evansville next week. The play, written by Graham Farrow of England, was published in his homeland and has been presented twice in New York. It opened Thursday at Healing America, 102 W. Ninth St., in Owensboro, where it will conclude its run May 12. On Thursday, Merely Players, the Owensboro troupe staging the show, will bring an 8 p.m. staged reading of the play to Penny Lane Coffee House, 600 SE Second St. in Evansville. The play, which is set in England, imagines what might happen if a group of cuckolded husbands sought vengeance on the gigolo they learned had been entertaining their wives. Farrow, author of a half-dozen other plays, has sold the movie rights to "Rattlesnakes" and is working on a screenplay for Piper Films of London. He stumbled upon information about Merely Players, which specializes in cutting-edge work, while perusing Internet sites, he says. Alan Velotta, Merely Players' founding artistic director, immediately agreed to stage the play and invited Farrow to visit during the production. "I told him I love to travel," says Farrow, who's in Owensboro for the production. He'll be in the audience Thursday at Penny Lane. The fully staged version of the show plays at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and May 11 and 12 at Healing America. Admission is $10 for the Owensboro performances
and $5 for the Penny Lane reading. |
