Charly Wood
Repertory Company
Charly Wood says he was born deep in a coal mine in Kentucky and has spent his life in trying to “Come to the Light.” In addition to that search he was done a few other things. He graduated from college in Kansas, got married there, and shortly took an M.A. in English. His main “life’s work” was being an instructor of college English in Missouri, Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky and Florida, mostly teaching the dreaded English Composition classes but also teaching American, English, and World Literature survey courses, and had the distinction of teaching one of the first dozen or so college level science fiction survey courses.
His teaching, though was regrettably scattered, interrupted by, and eventually
terminated by illness. He also worked on a newspaper in California and helped
organize and became producer of The River Players in northern California.
“Producer” in that sense evolved to mean “everything but directing and acting.”
His acting was limited to “emergency roles,” in instances where people cast in
parts somehow disappeared from the production with little or no notice. He also
spent some ten years in Tucson, Arizona where he made a hobby of researching and
writing about the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
Charly met Elizabeth Drake-Boyt in Tucson and eventually married her (in 2001) after they both had left Arizona—her to Florida and he to Kentucky. Vive la e-mail! While technically retired now he has done some free-lance writing and is currently a Contributing Editor to the Messenger-Inquirer.
